A message from Richard and Dorsen, ex child cobalt miners. It’s the best message I’ve ever received.

Please show your support for Dorsen

Hello Richard and Dorsen,

Thank you for your message.  It’s the most amazing, important message I have ever received. I will keep it forever. Thank you. My husband, Patrick, took these photos of me. Our dog, Bronte, wanted to send her love to you as well.

Asante. Mume wangu, Patrick, alichukua picha hizi kwangu. Mbwa wetu, Bronte, alitaka kutuma upendo wake kwako pia.

Your message travelled all the way from Lubumbashi, DR Congo to Brotton, a small village in England, close to the sea. It was the most wonderful thing to receive. Thank you so much.

We saw you on Sky News [February 2017] when Alex Crawford visited the cobalt mine in DR Congo. We have smartphones and we did not know they contained cobalt which you or other children find. We were sad and angry, because it is wrong for you to work like this.

Alex Crawford showed you working in a cobalt mine.

The next day, I woke up thinking about you. I wanted to do something to help you, if I could. There were so many people who wanted to help you. You are now living a different life at Kimbilio, with food, school instead of work, and somewhere comfortable to sleep. This makes us very happy. You are wonderful boys.

Siku iliyofuata, niliamka nkifikiri juu yenu.

Patrick and I have two grandsons. Jack is eleven, and Finley is eight years old, the same ages as you. We love our grandsons and we want you to know that we love you too. You are important to us, like our own family, and we want to know more about your life which you share with the other children.

I write to Ian Harvey and Gill Venton from England. Ian and Gill visited you recently. Gill sent me your message and the lovely photo of you. They’re good people. There are many people who want you to be happy and healthy, to go to school and enjoy your life.

There’s a happy picture of Ian (on the left) with you all. Looks great fun. Anyone wanting to help can donate to Kimbilio via Congo Children Trust, Global Giving.

I live in a little village called Brotton, close to Saltburn in England. I visited our local schools, St. Peter’s, and Badger Hill, to share your story. The teachers and school children want to know more about you all, and they want to help.

Thank you for helping Alex Crawford to tell the story of children and cobalt. I hope the people manufacturing smartphones will want to help you too.

Alex Crawford, Sky News journalist with Dorsen and Richard.

We are your friends, Richard and Dorsen, and all the children at Kimbilio.   We send you our love.

Tunakutumia upendo wetu.

Flinty and Patrick
